Outdoor Education
Youth Carpentry Workshops
A four-part Saturday morning series where children ages 8–14 build real projects alongside a professional carpenter and experienced educators — right here on the land at H.E.R. Living Campus.
Rooted in the Each One Teach One model, older students mentor younger builders as they work side by side. Every session follows a three-part rhythm: outdoor learning, the build, and a closing circle at the fire pit with families.

The Four Workshops
Birdhouse Workshop
Children learn to measure, cut, and assemble a functional birdhouse using hand tools. Younger builders (ages 8–10) focus on sanding, painting, and assembling pre-cut pieces. Older builders (ages 11–14) measure, mark, and cut their own pieces with guidance.
Take Home
A finished, hand-painted birdhouse
Outdoor Learning
Nature walk to observe local birds and identify nesting habits
Closing Circle
Families gather at the fire pit to share what they built and learned
Toolbox Workshop
Children build a sturdy wooden toolbox from scratch. Younger builders practice hammering nails and attaching handles on pre-cut frames. Older builders measure, saw, and assemble the entire box with a hinged lid.
Take Home
A handmade wooden toolbox
Outdoor Learning
Exploration of trees on campus — identifying wood types and their uses
Closing Circle
Families gather at the fire pit to share what they built and learned
Herb Garden Planter Box
Children construct a small raised planter box and fill it with herbs from the campus garden. Younger builders assemble pre-cut sides and plant herbs. Older builders measure, cut, and drill drainage holes before planting.
Take Home
A planted herb garden box with live herbs
Outdoor Learning
Garden tour — harvesting herbs and learning their uses in cooking and wellness
Closing Circle
Families gather at the fire pit to share what they built and learned
Dresser-Top Bookshelf
The most advanced build of the series. Children construct a small freestanding bookshelf. Younger builders sand, stain, and assemble pre-cut shelves. Older builders measure, cut, and join pieces using basic joinery techniques.
Take Home
A finished dresser-top bookshelf
Outdoor Learning
Campus walk discussing how structures in nature inspire human building
Closing Circle
End-of-summer celebration at the fire pit with all families
